Coconut Burfi Recipe

A simple and tasty Indian fudge recipe is prepared mainly with grated coconut, sugar, and milk. It is a common Indian dessert recipe prepared during Diwali, Holi, Raksha Bandhan & Navaratri. It can also be made with condensed milk and desiccated coconut, but this recipe follows the traditional recipe.

Here’s a simple and delicious Coconut Burfi recipe:

Ingredients:

  • Fresh grated coconut: 2 cups (you can also use desiccated coconut)
  • Sugar: 1.5 cups
  • Water: 1/2 cup
  • Ghee (clarified butter): 2 tbsp
  • Cardamom powder: 1/4 tsp
  • Chopped nuts (optional): 2 tbsp (like almonds, cashews)
  • Saffron strands: A few (optional, for flavor and color)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the pan: Grease a plate or a tray with ghee and set it aside. You’ll pour the burfi mixture into this later.
  2. Cook the sugar syrup:
In a pan, add sugar and water. Stir until the sugar dissolves completely and starts to form a slightly sticky syrup (about one-string consistency). It should take about 5-6 minutes on medium flame.
  3. Add grated coconut:
Once the syrup is ready, add the grated coconut to the sugar syrup and mix well. Stir continuously to combine the coconut with the syrup.
  4. Cook the mixture:
Add ghee and keep stirring the mixture on medium heat. Continue cooking until the mixture starts thickening and leaves the sides of the pan (about 8-10 minutes). Add cardamom powder for flavor.
  5. Shape the burfi:
Pour the coconut mixture into the greased tray. Flatten and smooth the top with a spatula. If you are adding chopped nuts or saffron, sprinkle them on top and gently press them into the mixture.
  6. Let it set:
Allow the burfi to cool for about 30-40 minutes. Once cooled, cut it into squares or diamonds.
  7. Serve:
Once completely set, remove the pieces and serve!
